Vinyasa

(Vi = in a special way; Nyasa = to place)

Vinyasa is a breath-synchronized movement. It places emphasis on linking all of the asanas in a series together through specific breath control into, out of, and during the postures. This linking of breath with movement creates a fluid practice that is graceful effortless where one posture flows directly into the next, the time spent in a posture is guided by the student’s own breath, and postures are strung together like a strand of beads, with the breath as the thread. We create internal heat through these movements, warming the body, unblocking our energy channels and focusing the mind on the natural rhythm of the breath.

The term Vinyasa refers to a specific series of movements that are frequently done between each asana in the Ashtanga Primary Series. Repetition of vinyasas helps purification of the body through increased circulation and sweating, creates and sustains heat in the body, allowing greater flexibility and lengthening of the muscles, and builds strong concentration, turning the practice into a moving meditation.
